IBM has announced new server computer based on Opteron processor to help increase computing performance and datacenter power efficiency. The portfolio of five new IBM systems and blades introduced is based on the next generation of AMD Opteron processors and is targeted to business performance computing
The systems promise more computing power but are more energy-efficient and generate less heat than earlier machines. They also cost less than comparable high-performance systems, IBM said.
The new systems being introduced by IBM today have been optimized for business performance computing by leveraging IBM’s Enterprise X-Architecture innovation to bring mainframe-inspired capabilities and sophisticated high-end technology to the company's x86 portfolio.
The announcement is a boost against its fight with Intel, which has released a range of new chips to recapture the marker share.
IBM expects the new AMD Opteron processor-based systems will strengthen IBM’s position as the world’s leading server vendor with the industry’s broadest arsenal of leading-edge x86 servers—from blades to racks.
IBM faces tough competition in the server market from Hewlett-Packard Co., the leading global server vendor by revenue in the first quarter, according to market researcher IDC.
