Google Provides Free Internet service

Google has announced to offer free Internet access to everyone in its Silicon Valley hometown. The new wireless network is believed to establish Mountain View, California as the largest U.S. city with free Internet access available throughout the entire community.

“Google launched a WiFi network in our hometown of Mountain View. Radios hanging on lampposts throughout the city are now broadcasting a "GoogleWiFi" wireless (802.11b/g) signal that brings wireless Internet access to the city's residents, businesses, and visitors,” the official Google blog said.

"It worked smashingly," Chris Sacca, Google head of special initiatives, said on Wednesday. "We have really been looking forward to this day. The citizens have embraced it as their network."

“It has been has been tremendously rewarding to partner with the local government, the schools, the library, the neighborhood associations, and all of our trusted testers to introduce the power of free, wireless Internet connectivity to the city,” a Google Manager said.

"One of the main goals of the project was to inspire citizens to realize there is this promise of access and at the same time to inspire entrepreneurs to develop networks," Sacca said. "What better way to go ahead and put your money where your mouth is than to build a network and show that it works", Sacca concluded
