Google CEO, Eric Shmidt, Joins Apple's Board of Directors
Google CEO Eric Schmidt is joining Apple Computer’s board of directors, the computer maker said. "Eric is obviously doing a terrific job as CEO of Google, and we look forward to his contributions as a member of Apple's board of directors," said Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs. "Like Apple, Google is very focused on innovation and we think Eric's insights and experience will be very valuable in helping to guide Apple in the years ahead."
The addition of Schmidt to the board of Apple brings the total number of board members to eight, including Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder and CEO, and Al Gore, former vice president of the United States.
Schmidt was elected at a board meeting held on Tuesday, an Apple spokesman said. He also sits on the board of directors of Californiabased Google and Princeton University's board of trustees.
"Apple is one of the companies in the world that I most admire," Schmidt said in a statement. "I'm really looking forward to working with Steve (Jobs) and Apple's board to help with all of the amazing things Apple is doing."
While Apple started as a computer company and Google as a search engine, the companies are beginning to compete in markets like online video. Google also has a feature that lets users search for songs and links them to online music stores, including the Apple iTunes site.
