French manufacturer Archos has been making portable media players (PMPs) for many years. Now, following the launch of a video-capable iPod, Archos has launched its French counterattack. The company recently announced its Gmini 402 Pocket Multimedia Center, the latest in a string of its multimedia players. The latest device hosts a 20GB hard drive and supports video, audio and photo images. It is Microsoft PlaysForSure-compatible (Windows Media Player 10), and supports both protected download and subscription music services. The Gmini 402 carries a 2.2-inch color LCD screen, measures 4.17-x-2.37-x-0.69-inches, and weighs 5.64 ounces. And in a bite at Apple’s core iPod market, the device is also Mac-compatible, the company claims.
Additional features include auto-synchronization with a computer; the capacity to transfer photos directly from digital cameras using USB host; support for MPEG-4(c), Windows Media Video(d) files, MP3, WMA, and protected WMA audio files. The Gmini 402 lists at .95 in the US, and ships with earphones, a USB cable, a USB Host adaptor, AC power charger, Quick Start Guide and a protective pouch. Optional accessories include a car adaptor, protective case, additional power charger, sound case, FM remote control and double headphone kit.
