Yahoo! Inc. has launched a translation webpage in Yahoo! Search that brings the service of Babel Fish, developed by Altavista. Yahoo version uses the same technologies that have been used by the version hosted on Alta Vista for almost a decade with some additional features to tie it in with other Yahoo services.
The first translation service on the Internet, Babel Fish, premiered in 1997 on Alta Vista, later acquired by Yahoo! It could translate words, sentences, and Web sites to and from English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Russian. Today's version adds five additional languages, including Greek, Dutch and Japanese. The new program, available in Germany and France, would allow the user to translate search queries into multiple languages and then search for those terms simultaneously.
The translate webpage can translate a chunk of up to 150 words and conduct a search based on translated text. Also users can enter URL into a "Translate a Web Page" box to convert the text of an entire Web page. An extensive list of 38 language pair choices is available in both the cases. In addition, Babel Fish one click translation is available though a button that can be added to the Yahoo! toolbar.
The service should now be available at http://babelfish.yahoo.com/.
