The U.K. Education and Research Networking Association (UKERNA) has announced that it would deploy Lucent Technologies routing equipment for a 10 gigabit per second (Gbps) network, known as JANET, to support a wide range of broadband services for universities and education establishments in the U.K.
Under the five-year framework contract, Lucent will deploy and maintain the network routers, which will be based on core routing infrastructure from Lucent's partner Juniper Networks.
For the project, Lucent will supply UKERNA with Juniper Networks T-series core IP (Internet Protocol) routing platforms designed to support broadband services nationwide, with points of presence in London, Bristol, Reading, Warrington, Glasgow, and Leeds. At the core of the network will be the Juniper Networks T640 Routing Node.
"JANET is now fully equipped to handle the long-term networking requirements of the U.K.'s education and research community, supporting IPv6, multicast, QoS and IPv6 multicast," said Gert-Jan Schenk, vice president of operations EMEA, Juniper Networks.
