IBM has announced a prototype service that allows users in an organization share favorite sites. This social bookmarking tool from IBM research named dogear adapts the concept of social bookmarking popularized by del.icio.us for use within an organization or corporation.
Social bookmarking allows users to tag their web favorites or bookmarks with meaningful labels, even more than one label per bookmark. For example, a bookmark about running in Rome could bear labels “running,” “recreation,” “travel,” and “Italy.” That’s a big advantage over the “pick-a-folder” approach provided in today’s browsers.
With social bookmarking helps one can not only access their favorite sites but also anyone else. Employers can share and discover new sources of information that might be missed by search engines.
Two other elements train dogear for corporate use. First, users have to go by their real names. That allows links to more information on individual users, e.g., corporate directories, etc. Second, because dogear operates behind a corporate firewall, it can also serve up bookmarks from a company’s intranet. So, if an employee is struggling with an expense report, he or she can search co-workers’ favorites for useful intranet sites.
