BenQ to Start Shipment of Blu-ray Writer in August
BenQ, Taiwan’s cell Phones and computer equipment maker, has unveiled an optical disk writer which can handle the new Blu-ray high volume DVD storage format for a price of 799 euros. The company said it plans to ship the burner in late August.
If BenQ meets its deadline, it would be become the first company to sell a Blu-ray burner, simultaneaously or ahead of the main Blu-ray inventors and promoters Sony Corp., Pioneer and Philips.
BenQ’s estimated cost is far less than Blu-ray burners from Sony and Pioneer, which are aiming for USD 1,500 and higher price points.
Blu-ray and HD DVD offer up to 50 Gigabytes of storage on a DVD sized disk. Most Blu-ray and HD DVD players will also play back and burn CDs and standard DVDs.
