Microsoft, Yahoo And Google Top Web Ratings; Wikipedia, YouTube Make Big Gains
Microsoft, Yahoo!, Google, and eBay took the top positions, however relative newcomers Wikipedia and YouTube are making a rapid climb up the World Wide Web (WWW), as per the monthly Internet snapshot, released by Comscore. Wikipedia had 154 million visitors in September, while YouTube came in number 14 with 81 million visitors.
According to Comscore, Wikipedia and YouTube both experienced a 12% traffic increase from August to September. Wikipedia is a community-based encyclopedia, whose accuracy and relevance is dependent on active Wikipedia members.
YouTube is also a community driven site, where users are encouraged to upload personal video clips and movies. The site has collected a vast array of strange, funny, interesting, and copyrighted material; an aspect that many feel will challenge the longevity of the site. However with Google's recent USD 1.65 billion purchase, these fears have been somewhat mitigated, as per sources.
On the other hand, Josh Bernoff, an analyst at Forrester Research, said a takeover by Google, which already has a video service, would "make a strange sort of sense".
"Google has a weakness in that the community space in the web is becoming more and more important," he said. "They're beginning to lose opportunities to MySpace." Bernoff said Google's engineers could help YouTube build new tools that limit users' ability to upload copyrighted content.
Eric Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of Google, said "The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Google's mission to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful”. And Chad Hurley, CEO and Co-Founder of YouTube said, "Our community has played a vital role in changing the way that people consume media, creating a new clip culture. By joining forces with Google, we can benefit from its global reach and technology leadership to deliver a more comprehensive entertainment experience for our users and to create new opportunities for our partners".
