Nokia Buys Enpocket

Nokia said it has acquired Boston-based mobile advertising start-up Enpocket, in a move that could put pressure on wireless carriers. Financial terms were not made known.

Enpocket shows advertisements on cell phones in various formats such as banner ads, video clips and text messages. It works very closely with Sprint Nextel in the US and Vodafone, combining their customer data with real time information, such as a subscriber’s location and key words searched, to place ads that generate higher response rates.

The deal shows Nokia growing interest in the software and services business. Earlier this month Nokia said it wanted to focus more on software and services. Nokia described the move as “an important element in monetising those services for our customers and partners.”

Enpocket is backed by BlueRun Ventures, GrandBanks Capital, Dolphin Equity Partners, Brú Venture Capital.
