Rock Your Wii With Rock Band

After chart-topping performances on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, the Harmonix-developed rhythm is set to bow on Nintendo's Wii.

Harmonix and MTV Games along with Electronic Arts announced that the award-winning music video game Rock Band is coming to the Nintendo Wii in June, 2008 at a suggested retail price of USD 169.99.

The Wii edition of Rock Band will be launched in the US and Canada as a special edition bundle including the game, drums, microphone, and a wireless guitar peripheral. Although stand-alone instruments will be available on day one, there were no announced plans for an unbundled edition of the game.

Also exclusive for the Wii version, there are five extra songs on disc. Also, the instruments don't use the Wiimote, as they work much like they do on other consoles. However, there's currently no word on whether Rock Band for the Wii support downloadable content or online play, but we guess it eventually will.

"The Wii's success among casual and core gamers of all ages makes it an ideal match for the cross-generational appeal of the music featured in Rock Band," says Bob Picunko, Vice President of Electronic Games and Interactive Products at MTV.

Rock Band has recently reached the six million downloads mark. Also, Harmonix has released a major patch and a full-featured, in-game music store. The store has a "user-friendly interface to streamline and enhance the music shopping experience," and allows players to "view, purchase, and sort all downloadable songs tracks by Artist, Song Title, Genre, Albums, Pack," with full album art, song previews, and instrument-by-instrument difficulty levels.

Rock Band includes music tracks that span every genre of rock ranging from alternative and classic rock to heavy metal and punk rock. The game has earned over 40 awards this year including Game Critics Award: Best of Show E3 2007 and three awards at The 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards including Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Family Game of the Year, and Outstanding Achievement in Soundtrack. Rock Band is rated "t" for Teen for lyrics and mild suggestive themes by the ESRB board.
