Mobile WiMax Would Come Later This Year, Says Sprint
Sprint and Samsung recently revealed that the companies have completed commercial acceptance testing, including overall performance, handoff performance and handoff delay, on Sprint's Xohm WiMax mobile broadband offering, and the mobile Wimax technology is on track to be launched later this year.
The new technology would provide high-speed Internet connections for laptops and cell phones. WiMax will cover wide areas of the United States while providing the next generation of high-speed Internet access for cell phone users.
Clearing the network for commercial use means that Sprint's WiMax implementation has met overall performance and hand-off testing standards. The company has been conducting performance tests since June 2007, both in lab settings as well as on the company's trial networks in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. areas. Interoperability testing with WiMax devices officially got underway in April 2008.
Samsung has been working with Sprint in the United States to test and build Sprint’s XOHM mobile broadband Internet service compliant to the mobile WiMAX standard. Sprint refers to Xohm as an ecosystem complete with a developer community, selling partners, infrastructure builders, and devices including handsets and ultra mobile PCs.
Completing commercial acceptance testing "is a major step towards launch readiness and Sprint is extremely pleased with the performance of the mobile WiMAX network and access devices from Samsung," said Xohm president Barry West, in a statement.
