OLPC Chairman Rolls Out XO 2 Laptops
OLPC Foundation chairman Nicholas Negroponte at an event this week rolled out the new version of the XO laptop designed for schoolchildren in developing countries. Called XO-2, the new laptop aims to integrate new advances in technology and to further drive down the cost.
Carrying a target price tag of just USD 75 per unit, the XO 2.0 is a highly slimmed-down version of OLPC's current XO model and is designed for students that, in some cases, must walk miles to and from school.
Embracing twin touch-screen panels, the hinged XO2 will arrive as half the size of its predecessor and abandons the conventional keyboard input interface entirely, instead allowing the device to display a pressure sensitive keyboard for its users on one screen while the other can serve as the monitor. Dual-touch sensitive displays will be used to enhance the e-book experience, with a dual-mode display similar to the current XO laptop.
The new machine will also be more energy efficient, half the size of the first generation device and lighter to carry. It will continue to sport the XO logo in a multitude of colors so that children can personalize them.
