id Software, Yet Another Gaming Company to Depart from ESA
id Software, the creators of Doom and Quake, has announced that it is no longer a member of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA).
id Software has now become the fourth major recent departure from the ESA's ranks of developers and publishers, following Activision, Vivendi, and LucasArts.
The ESA serves as an organization for the game industry that does lobbying in Washington and as well as hosting the annual E3 Media and Business Summit.
The evacuation reasons are unclear, but the recent departures are leaving the ESA empty with limited options on what to do about this year's E3.
Among the names retiring from E3 or ESA, id Software was surrounded by the most uncertainty. According to an ESA statement, signed by senior vice president Rich Taylor, they respect id Software’s decision, and they continue to admire their creativity and innovation.
