No Timetable for Mobile Skype, Says Niklas Zennstrom
Skype's efforts to move into mobile calling may be at a standstill. Skype Chief Executive Officer Niklas Zennstrom was quoted as saying the company is running into 'technical obstacles' in making Skype service available on regular cell phones. Zennstrom also said he can't 'give a timetable' on when Skype-enabled mobile phones from big manufacturers like Nokia will debut.
"It is challenging and is taking much longer than expected," he continued. While the company does have a version for Windows Mobile in Europe, it is not commonly downloaded. Also in the interview with a Finnish newspaper, Zennstrom acknowledged that some mobile operators saw the company as a threat, but added that Skype was looking into ways to work together with other operators on new services.
Skype, purchased by online auctioneer eBay (EBAY) last year, specialises in low-priced PC-to-PC calling. But for last two years it's been trying to expand into calling for mobile devices. Analysts see the move as a way to boost sales. "Having a mobility [offering] is key for them to generate stronger revenues with higher margins," says James Friedland, an analyst at Cowen & Co.
