CA has said that its newly released CA Internet Security Suite 2007 provides as much as USD 6,500 in protection to customers in the event they are affected by PC virus infections or a victim of identity theft. Warranty Corporation of America (WaCA), a provider of warranty and extended service plan related solutions administers the protection programs
The new program comes in two parts:
- First, consumers in eligible states are qualified to receive up to USD 5,000 in Identity Theft coverage after purchasing CA Internet Security Suite 2007 and installing and registering for WaCA's Mobile Lifeline(R)(MLL) software. The coverage includes costs for lost wages, legal fees, re-filing applications and fixing credit reports in the event a user's identity is compromised.
- Next, consumers are also eligible for up to USD 1,500 in Virus Protection coverage when purchasing either the CA Internet Security Suite or CA Anti-Virus 2007. This covers technical support, repair services and hardware replacement in the event a user's laptop or PC fails due to a virus infection.
Both services are administered by WaCA and take effect following the installation of the CA products. While MLL is automatically included with the purchase of CA Internet Security Suite at no additional cost, registration is required in order to receive MLL security.
According to the recent Consumer Reports State of the Net Survey, virus infections caused an estimated 2.6 million households to replace their computers in the past two years, and the total estimated damage as a result of virus infections is USD 5.2 billion.
In addition, ID theft remains prevalent. Phishing attacks, which account for the largest number of online ID thefts, remain rampant. Consumer Reports states that the median cost per victim has increased five-fold. According to the 2006 Identity Fraud Survey Report (co-issued by Javelin Strategy & Research and the Better Business Bureau) the mean fraud amount per victim is expected to be as high as USD 6,383 and the time to resolve the issue can be as high as 40 hours per victim.
After purchasing CA Internet Security Suite 2007, users register in the MLL remote data protection software, which automatically makes them eligible for up to USD 5,000 in coverage should an identify theft event occur, as well as providing a number of immediate preventative measures if the registered computer is lost or stolen, such as:
- Determining whether files have been accessed or modified
- Remote retrieval, encryption and deletion of files
- Blockage of computer screen
- Shut down or restart of computer
Similarly, the Virus Protection program will service or ultimately replace up to three PCs with an aggregate limit of USD 1,500 if it is determined that those PCs failed due to a virus infection after CA Anti-Virus 2007 had been properly installed.
"WaCA's support of these security products evolved from our extensive history in PC services and repair and, to that extent, they are an extension of our core business," said Michael Costanza, executive vice president of Sales, WaCA.
The USD 1,500 Virus Protection coverage is not available outside of the US.
