One of the key challenges faced by many companies in Asia-Pacific implementing SOA is the inability to align and garner support from business users to utilise these services.
In a new survey done by IDC on Asia-Pacific’s companies, it emerged that with the rise of emerging technologies such as Web 2.0, AJAX and Mashups, organisations could potentially improve their success rate of service-oriented IT projects by leveraging these technologies to improve user interface and communication and aligning with corporate goals and business directives.
"Leveraging communication platforms based on these emerging technologies (Web 2.0, wikis, blogs) in the early stages of the planning and pilot phase could help facilitate internal organisational communication and greatly enhance the rate of SOA adoption," says Patrick Chan, Research Director for IDC’s Asia-Pacific Emerging Technologies IT Services. "Getting stakeholders involved in the business service planning and operational usage domain helps contribute to the service planning and usage process while benefiting all end users within the organisations. Salesforce’s Appexchange is a good example of using a platform-based approach to help foster creative services and usage," adds Chan.

A service-oriented approach, through increased services flexibility for applications, network and corporate data, enables agility in business process management for composite services and intelligence required by different business users. When combined with new emerging technologies (Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe AIR, AJAX, Mashups. etc.) equipped with more efficient and improved user interface, business users can now easily communicate amongst team members and enable IT teams to react quickly to changing business requirements. These are interesting evolutions in contrast to previous static BAM (Business Activity Monitoring) and rigid dashboard presentation.
Of utmost importance, management would be able to easily and quickly monitor services and business key performance indicators (KPI) with visual presentations while aligning efficient services and processes to improve operational efficiencies, revenue performance and customer service. In summary, the rise of business intelligence, business process management, and emerging technologies like Web 2.0, AJAX etc., are all aligning and contributing towards service orientation for the good of the corporation.
