IBM Joins OpenOffice.org Project

Current Issue

After years of wrangling, IBM has finally decided to join the OpenOffice.org open-source community and said it will contribute code to the office suite. Openoffice is an open source rival to Microsoft’s office suite.

IBM, based in Armonk, New York, has been using OpenOffice.org codes to develop a wide variety of productivity applications, which it has included in Lotus 8, the latest version of its collaboration suite.

Doug Heintzman, director of strategy for the Lotus division at IBM said by joining the project, it will contribute its own code to the project to be more visible about its work to integrate OpenOffice.org into Lotus.

The reason why IBM stayed out of OpenOffice.org project for so long was because Sun Microsystems, IBM’s archrival in the server and software space, was the founder and backer of the project.

"[The community] has had some challenges in recruiting an awful lot of big names to support the activity, but [now] we think there are some that can provide an example to us all to provide a vibrant place to add value," Heintzman said. "We hope that our voice at the table will help us evolve the community."
