Sun Microsoft Kiss, Make Up

Current Issue

Sun Microsystems and Microsoft have patched up after being rivals for many years. Sun will now build servers with Microsoft’s Windows Operating System in it instead of forcing customers to install the software on their own.

This deal comes three years after Sun, once a bitter rival of Microsoft, arrived at a truce with Microsoft when the Redmond, Washington based giant gave USD 1.95 billion to Sun in an antitrust and patent violation case.

Sun will incorporate Microsoft's Windows Server 2003 software into its X64 servers. Sun Microsystems said Windows based X86 servers would be available in three months.

According to IDC, Sun is the world’s third largest maker of corporate servers behind IBM and HP and Microsoft will gain from the deal.

For long Sun has been known for building its servers with its own chips and operating systems. Now its servers run on either AMD or Intel chips. Now people will even more choice when it comes to operating systems as they can buy either a Solaris OS based Server or a Windows based server.
