Sun Intros UltraSparc T2-based Servers
Sun Microsystems released the first servers running its UltraSparc T2 processor or Niagara 2. The processor is launched in two racks and a blade.
The UltraSparc T2 consists of a pair of rack-mounted systems and a blade server based on the new chip with eight cores and eight threads per core.
Sun claims the multicore and multithreaded Sun Sparc Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers deliver double the performance and capacity than its predecessor, UltraSparc T1-based servers, without an increase in size.
John Fowler, Sun's executive vice president, systems, said the latest release is part of Sun’s effort to move to systems that are designed for very high core and thread count. He further added that the new system is ideally suited for virtualization, a direction that will wrap Sun’s entire product line over time.
Each system supports the latest version of Solaris OS, with virtualization capabilities in Solaris Containers and Logical Domains (LDoms).
T5120 and T5220 servers are now available worldwide.
