Apple iPhone Gets Hearty Welcome in Europe

Current Issue

Fans in Germany and Britain queued through the chilling night this weekend to get their hands on the much awaited Apple’s iPhone, the must-have gadget that is set to shake up the mobile industry.
In London some 1300-odd Apple, Carphone Warehouse and O2 stores faced a surge of customers who queued for hours to be among the first to get hold of one. Over 10,000 iPhones were sold by Friday afternoon in Germany, a T-Mobile spokeswoman said, after it went on sale at midnight in a Deutsche Telekom shop in Cologne. The two-iPhone per person limit was in force, but Apple waived its self-imposed 'credit card only' rule and accepted cash payments as a first-day special.
Apple iphone comes in a slim and lightweight casing. It is 115 mm tall, 61mm wide and 11.6mm thick. iPhone also come in a variety of popular colors including classic colors of black and white. The functions of the iPhone can be controlled through the multi touch screen. The resolution of the screen is of 320 x 480 pixels that give unmatched picture clarity.
Although the wait is over for some fans, there are concerns that consumers are only able to use the phone with the O2 mobile network. The phones can be unlocked for use on other networks but this voids the warranty and could break the device if software updates from Apple are installed. As many as 250,000 users in the US have unlocked the device using free and paid-for software to make the phone work on different networks, and to load third-party software not supported by Apple.

Apple has sold more than 1.4 million iPhones since it went on sale in the US four months ago. Many iPhone owners in the UK have not been content to wait for the official launch and have bought the device in the US and unlocked it for use on any network.

In Germany, iPhone costs about 399 euros (USD 585), on top of a two-year contract through T-Mobile starting at 49 euros a month. Whereas customers in UK would pay 269 pounds (USD 568) on top of an 18 month contract costing a minimum of 35 pounds per month.

The phone will go on sale in France at the end of the month and Asia by 2008.
