At the Oracle OpenWorld user conference, Oracle announced Oracle VM, server virtualization software that supports both Oracle and non-Oracle applications.
The new virtualisation software features support for Linux OS its has also been certified to work with the Oracle database, Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Applications,
Oracle VM is built on Xen hypervisor open-source code and is designed to support and centrally manage Oracle and non-Oracle applications within virtualised environments, said Oracle president Charles Phillips.
Phillips said that Oracle VM is the application provider's Web-based answer to managing virtual server pools running on x86 and z86-64-based systems. "We have an answer to virtualisation," he said.
Oracle VM offers:
-Simplified Installation -- with single install, patching and upgrading for both Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Linux;
-Faster Deployment -- through pre-configured Virtual Machine images of
Oracle Database and Oracle Enterprise Linux;
-Greater Efficiencies -- three times more efficient than other server virtualization products;
-Linux and Windows Support -- support for Linux and Windows guest operating systems including: Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 and 5; RHEL3,RHEL4 and RHEL5; Windows 2003, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP (on HV capable hardware);
-Single Source of Support -- backed by Oracle's world-class support organization, customers have a single point of contact for their entire
virtual environments, including the Linux operating system, and Oracle
Database, Fusion Middleware and Application software.
-Low Total Cost of Ownership -- enables customers to deploy server virtualization for a fraction of the cost when compared to other vendor products.
“Oracle's ability to supply database systems, middleware, and applications, combined with the ability to configure and manage them as virtual machines, meant it had outstripped its competitors. I don't think there's any other company in the industry that can do this," said Philips.
Vendors providing support for Oracle VM include Intel, Dell, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Hewlett-Packard, Network Appliance, QLogic, Emulex , Pillar Data Systems and Liquid Computing.
To counter the Oracle VM announcement , VMWare also unveiled VMware Server 2.
