iPhone going 3G in 2008 Says AT&T

Current Issue

AT&T's chief executive has revealed that there will be a new edition of the iPhone available next year that will use 3G technology for faster data access.

Randall Stephenson's, AT&T chief executive officer, comments came at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. "You'll have it next year," he said. He didn't know how much the phone would cost, saying that Steve Jobs would set the price for the new iPhone.

When Apple released the iPhone domestically in June on AT&T's network, the two companies used Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) or Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS). The decision to use the slower 2G standard caused complaints among users, but U.S customers have the option to use Wi-Fi where available. Currently, the lack of 3G data transfer rates is likely to trim iPhone’s popularity in Asia and Europe.

The ability to work with third-generation wireless networks will give Apple iPhone an opportunity to compete for customers who often use data intensive services, such as web-browsing of “data heavy” web-sites and downloading music from the Internet on the go.

One of the problems with the 3G chips is that they are "power hogs," commented Steve Jobs during the U.K. iPhone rollout. Jobs said they expect to see better battery consumption later next year.

While any version of 3G network connection (EVDO, HSDPA, etc) will indisputably improve user experience with iPhone by boosting network connection speed, end-users, who already have an iPhone would probably insist on some other additional features for the device that has become a cult one for some people.

Apple has set a goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 -- the company sold its one-millionth iPhone on September 10, 2007, 74 days after it was introduced.
