YouTube, Wikipedia And Facebook Are The Most Searched Site On YahooSearch
Yahoo has announced the Top Trends in Search, as told through the billions of searches in 2007 conducted by millions of Yahoo searchers around the globe.
In the section named The Year of I, You and Wii – top 10 in tech, Yahoo revealed that YouTube is the most searched site for its Video. Following it to the second place is Wikipedia. Where as social networking site Facebook is ranked as the third most website looked out for.
Apple's iTunes, iPod and iPhone are ranked 4,5 & 6 in popularity, but it's not all about people wanting to visit the Apple-related sites. In the case of iPhone, there was a lot of publicity and controversy about Apple's rebate announcement that may have sparked a lot of interest in that type of information from other sites.
Rounding out the top ten was the Nintendo's Wii, Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's Playstation 3 and In a year which has seen a number of prominent releases, including Halo 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, Guitar Hero was the only individual game at number ten – although again no distinction was made between different sequels.
Raj Gossain, Yahoo's senior director for marketing search says a lot of Yahoo users use the yahoo search box for navigation and prefer to use it as a launch pad to visit other websites.
Gossain admits that these kinds of search results, which shoot Yahoo users off to competitors or at least away from Yahoo, aren't that interesting but they do reflect broad consumer trends. "It's clear there's continued reliance and popularity in social media with YouTube and Facebook, and people use sites like Wikipedia as a starting point for research into things like the presidential campaign."
For the first time, Yahoo released the top results for its del.icio.us social bookmarking site.
del.icio.us users tend to be more involved on the Web from a technology point of view. The top category was the very generic term "Design," which reflects del.icio.us users interest in Web design and visual and industrial issues and products related to design.
Following Design in the top ten lists for del.icio.us were HDTV, Games, Music, Web 2.0 and Video. A surprise at number seven was Ubuntu, a popular distribution of the Linux operating system that made news earlier this year when Dell announced it would offer Ubuntu preloaded on some of its systems.
Travel, Photography and Mac round out the deli.cio.us top ten; Apple's Mac was the only desktop computer to make either the top ten tech or del.icio.us lists.
"Searches can give us insight into a culture in motion and Yahoo's Top Trends in Search in 2007 reflects the world's fascination with crossroads and breakthroughs. People weren't just buzzing about celebrity. More than ever they sought to be environmentally responsible, were using the Web to find out about food and product safety and getting the scoop on the latest gadgets," said Heather Cabot, Yahoo Web Life editor.
