SAP Agrees to Support VMware Virtualization

Current Issue

SAP has become the latest, and one of the largest, application vendors to support its applications running in virtual servers using VMware ESX Server.

Under the arrangement, SAP will support its virtualized software running on VMware and 64-bit Windows, Linux and Solaris platforms. Servers from Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP and IBM are also certified for SAP running on VMware.

Parag Patel, vice president of alliances for VMWare, said it took some time for SAP to provide production-environment support due to the company's high standards: "SAP is demanding, they're conservative. They're cautious of what goes into the environments of their customers."

He also acknowledged the technological implications of virtualizing an enterprise's ERP (enterprise resource planning) infrastructure. "Companies run their businesses around SAP," he said. "It's one thing to virtualize a lightweight application and another thing to virtualize something like SAP."

The company's newly strengthened alliance with SAP comes at a time when it remains the dominant market leader for virtualization but is seeing competing products from the likes of Sun and Oracle emerge.

VMware also has customers running Oracle applications within virtual environments, but VMware does not have the same sort of comprehensive agreement with Oracle that it now has with SAP, said VMware. Earlier this year, Oracle announced that it would enter into the virtualization field with free software.

Asked if the SAP-VMware support agreement was an anti-Oracle move initiated by SAP, Patel said, "I haven't gotten those vibes."

In addition to its agreement with SAP, VMware announced that the 3.5 version of its Virtual Infrastructure suite, which includes updates to its ESX hypervisor and other new features, is now available.
