Sony has launched Firmware Update v2.10 for the Playstation 3, officially upgrading the game console to a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player.
The firmware adds Picture-in-Picture support for viewing supplemental content on-demand (just as you can with HD DVD), and adds support secondary audio and video streams, useful for interactive features.
The first discs to incorporate Profile 1.1 features are scheduled to hit store shelves in January 2008. To date, announced titles include 'Resident Evil: Extinction' from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 'Sunshine' from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, and both 'War' and '3:10 to Yuma' from Lionsgate Entertainment.
All Profile 1.1 discs are expected to function normally in existing players as far as movie playback and traditional bonus features go, but the new 1.1 enhanced features will not be accessible without a Profile 1.1 compliant player.
The new PlayStation 3 Firmware upgrade 2.10 will also include the new Blu-Ray Data Utility.
The upgrade will also feature the Voice Changer, which will allow users to manipulate the tone of their voice from baritone to soprano and that will work for both video and voice chat.
But even more important than the Voice Changer is the fact that the PlayStation 3 will support DiVx and WMV playback. Now, DiVx based sites like Stage 6, are fully viewable using PlayStation 3's browser.
In addition, users will now be able to store and view DiVx and WMV on their consoles’s hard-drive.
Sony's documentation for the update also outlines a new "BD Data Utility," which is described as saving management data used by Blu-ray Disc.
And last but not least, the new upgrade will bring an audio enhancing feature for those who store music on their video gaming consoles. There is a Type 3 music setting when viewing “Music Settings” in the “Bitmapping” subfolder.
According to stats from the Blu-ray Disc Association and Video Business, if you include Playstation 3 among the pool of Blu-ray players in homes, then 2 million Blu-ray players now support Blu-ray Profile 1.1.
Among standalone players shipping today, only LG's Super Blu BH200 and Panasonic's DMP-BD30 currently support Profile 1.1.
