Sony to Make Available Just the 40GB PS3 in Japan
Sony has made the announcement that they have discontinued shipments of the 20GB model and the 60GB model of the PS3 in Japan.
The 20GB and 60GB model have been available in Japan for just months but Sony has already pulled the plug on them in favor of the 40GB model which does not have any type of backwards compatibility in any way.
The 40 GB PS3 has two USB ports instead of four and Sony ditched also the multi-memory card port. Unlike the 80 GB PS3, the 40 GB version model isn’t compatible with the PlayStation 2 games.
The newer 40GB model sells for less in the country than the already discounted and outgoing models; USD 362 for the 40GB compared to USD 410 for the 20GB and USD 501 for the 60GB.
The 20GB model was never launched in Europe and was withdrawn from sale shortly after launch in North America. The 60GB model has already been phased out in North American and Europe, in favor of the cheaper 40GB model, although until now Japan has continued to market the model.
Sony claims to have sold 1.2 million units by the end of 2007, thanks to the holiday shopping season. The price cut on the 40GB model certainly helped the company sell more units in Japan this last November - more than rival game company Nintendo.
The PS3 gaming console was originally launched in Japan in November 2006 and the final shipment for the 60GB and 20GB PS3 is scheduled to take place in January 2008.
