Guitar Hero Works Wonder for Activision
In response to the recent release of NPD numbers for 2007, Activision highlighted its showing as the number one U.S. console and handheld publisher for the calendar year.
According to year-end NPD Group numbers, the publishing giant held a record 17.7 percent of the market share, a 7.2 percent rise over the same period the previous year. Activision's Guitar Hero was the top-selling franchise for the year, powered by Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which was the number one title across all platforms in both dollars and units sold, despite not being released until the end of October.
Robert Kotick, Chairman and CEO, Activision, Inc., commented, "For the first time in our history, we were the No.1 U.S. publisher for the calendar year. We are well on our way to delivering sixteen years of record revenue growth and by far our most profitable year ever."
Wrapping up the year on a high note, Activision captured both the number one and number three spots on the sales chart for December with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and the hit FPS Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, according to the NPD.
In her comments alongside the full year's NPD results, NPD's Anita Frazier noted, "One has to recognize the tremendous success of the Guitar Hero franchise. Guitar Hero games sold over USD 820 million at U.S. retail which is a record for any single franchise in any one year."
Activision posted net revenues of USD 1.5 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2007, and recently announced high levels of revenue generation for each quarter since.
