EMC Marks Its Presence in SaaS Market with Mozy Enterprise

Current Issue

EMC has unveiled its first enterprise SaaS offering and finally added flesh to the bones of its long-term services strategy using technology acquired when it bought Mozy for USD 76 million last October.

EMC's initial service for Mozy is a hosted backup offering for desktops, laptops and remote Windows servers built on a new platform the company calls EMC Fortress, a secure, scalable infrastructure that will also power future software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings.

"We've introduced EMC Fortress, a secure, multitenant, scalable SaaS delivery platform providing customers with centralized billing, management, and metering," said Tom Heiser, senior VP and general manager of EMC's SaaS Business Unit.

For now, the service is limited to Windows-based PCs and servers. EMC provides users with services such as security, backup and recovery, data de-duplication, billing and metering. The first of these applications is Mozy Enterprise, an online backup offering aimed at users looking to protect data held on desktops, laptops, and remote Windows Servers.

MozyEnterprise will cost USD 5.25 a month per desktop or laptop plus 70 cents per gigabyte protected, and USD 9.25 a month per Windows Server plus USD 2.35 a month per gigabyte protected. The software-as-a-service (SaaS) enables users to restore multiple file versions up to 30 days old. The MozyEnterprise service consists of three different Mozy online backup products: MozyHome, MozyPro and MozyEnterprise.

In addition to the EMC Fortress platform link, the data storage company is promoting the advantages of other EMC products and services: EMC's RSA security division integrates key management, authentication, and authorization features, for instance. EMC has signed up key resellers with presence in enterprise markets including Verizon Business, eFile Cabinet, FusionStorm, and TelX.

MozyEnterprise powered by EMC Fortress is available immediately in North America through EMC and its reseller partners, with plans to offer the service internationally later this year. Verizon Business will also offer the new service.
