Linux Phone Debuts Before Android

Current Issue

LiMo Foundation, a global consortium of mobile wireless firm, has announced the on-schedule availability in March 2008 of the first release of the LiMo Platform-the first globally competitive, Linux-based software platform for mobile handsets-together with the immediate public availability of the application programming interface specifications.

The LiMo Platform incorporates Linux and is a hardware-independent, modular, plug-in-based technology that works around an open operating system. It supports downloaded programs through its secure run-time function. The fact that the platform includes Linux ensures that it is adaptable to the entire mobile industry. Linux is also known for its quality of function with mobile phones, compatibility with embedded systems, and ability to link with products operating from a different platform.

"The LiMo Platform is being readied by mobile leaders working in unison to deliver an open handset platform for use by the whole industry," said Morgan Gillis, executive director of the LiMo Foundation, in a statement. "The first release of the LiMo platform combines technologies already extensively market proven within an array of leading handsets. This will enable initial LiMo handsets to register in the market place far more rapidly than handsets based on unproven technology."

The foundation has published a beta version of the application programming interfaces (API) so that developers can begin writing software to run on it. The APIs are still beta versions because the underlying software is not yet complete, and minor details may change ahead of its release in March, Gillis said.

The LiMo Foundation has been operating for just over a year now. It is a consortium of mobile industry leaders who share the unified vision of furthering industry potential and growth by joining their capabilities. The founding members of the Foundation were NEC, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung and Vodafone.
