Smash Bros. Brawl Sets New Sales Record for Nintendo
The greatly anticipated, recently released Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a game set for compatibility with the Nintendo Wii, has reportedly broken through Nintendo's records, making it the fastest-selling game in the company's history. Since the game's release a week ago, the title has sold over 1.4 million units. On March 9 alone, the game sold 874,000 units.
According to Nintendo, this computes to a rate of more than 120 units per minute between its launch and March 16th. The title features dozens of classic Nintendo characters battling alongside other industry mascots like Sonic the Hedgehog and Metal Gear's Solid Snake.
"Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content."
The title supports battle for up to four players either locally or online. Nintendo also notes that its predecessor, Smash Bros. Melee, was the best-selling GameCube title of all time, selling over 7 million copies worldwide.
