Microsoft's OXML Recieves Setback
Microsoft's Open XML file format recieved a set back when the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) technica committee voted against it, in a meeting this week. The technical committee was constituted by the BIS, after moves by Microsoft and other organizations to make Open XML a standard of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).The committee had rejected the OXML standard last September, and had given the softwaare giant time till this month of address the comments. However, when the decision came to whether or not India should change its September decision, 13, including the Department of Information Technology, IBM, Sun Microsystems, IIT-M and IIM-A, voted against Microsoft.
The five who voted in favour of Microsoft included Wipro, TCS, Nasscom, Infosys and Microsoft itself. Hardware body Manufacturers’ Association of Information Technology abstained from voting.
Microsoft now awaits a final judgment from the ISO on March 31st, when the standards organisation recompiles the votes from all countries. This could be crucial for Microsoft as not getting ISO approval could mean a loss of government business.
