Skype Faces Rejection Over Open Wireless Network Plan
Kevin Martin, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission said an application by Skype Inc. division to require wireless operators to allow any device on their networks should be rejected. During his keynote at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas, Martin called the wireless industry "the poster child for competition," and said the Internet telephony company's request was "premature."
Martin said he would circulate a proposal among the four other FCC commissioners dismissing the petition which Skype, a unit of online auction leader eBay Inc, had filed a little over a year ago with the communications regulator.
Skype, which provides free voice calls and videoconferencing over Internet connections, asked the commission in February 2007 to apply the 1968 Carterfone decision to wireless networks. The decision opened AT&T's wireline network to phones not made by the monopoly phone company.
Martin also added that he would like to see the wireless industry take the lead in opening up networks to competition, so the FCC could take a lesser role. Government, however, still has the responsibility to ensure a competitive market that fosters innovation and brings competitive pricing and services to consumers.
