Mozilla Takes Cover Off from Firefox 3.0 Release Candidate 1

Current Issue

Mozilla has delivered the first official release candidate of Firefox 3.0, the next major version of the popular open source web browser. This public preview release is intended for developer testing and community feedback before the final release with focus on testing the core functionality provided by many new features and changes to the platform.

Firefox 3.0 is built on top of Gecko 1.9, a new version of Mozilla's powerful rendering engine, which now uses the cross-platform Cairo rendering framework. According to Mozilla, the new version adds several new features to make Firefox 3.0 more secure, easier to use and more personal. It also adds improvements for developers and promises to offer better performance.

The new browser offers malware protection, web forgery protection page, anti-virus integration, Vista parental controls, better protection against cross-site JSON data leaks and much more. Performance has been improved through improvements to JavaScript engine as well as profile guided optimizations. Compared to Firefox 2, web applications like Google Mail and Zoho Office were twice as fast in Firefox 3, and also use less memory than previous versions, claimed Mozilla.
