GameStop Declares Microsoft’s Zune as Dead
GameStop, a videogame retail chain with 4,500 locations throughout United States and 15 countries, has said that it will stop selling the
Microsoft Zune, Microsoft’s iPod killer, citing its poor performance in terms of sales.
In its initial six months, Microsoft sold 1 million units but since then, and despite a complete line revamp, sales have slowed to a crawl. It has taken another year for Microsoft to reach 2 million units sold for its Zune line, a considerably slower pace for sales.
Microsoft has only sold 2 million Zunes since the Microsoft Zune's release in 2006, while Apple sold 10.6 million iPods in the first quarter of 2008. The device in the first quarter of this year accounted for only 4 percent of the U.S. portable music player market, wherein the iPod, on the other hand, accounted for 71 percent. GameStop will continue to sell the Microsoft Zune through its Web site, but only until the current stock is exhausted.
