NEC Comes Up with Energy-Saving Server
NEC Corporation, a provider of IT network integrated solutions and semiconductor solutions, recently revealed that it has just finished developing a specialized space and energy-saving server, dubbed as Eco Center. The company says it consumes up to 55 percent less power, takes up 50 percent less space and is approximately 58 percent lighter than conventional servers.
The Eco Center incorporates batteries that require 20 percent less electrical power than conventional batteries. Furthermore, its server components are optimally located to maximise cooling airflow, which reduces the system's temperature and amount of electricity required to operate.
The ECO CENTER can house 64 servers, each of which is loaded with two quad-core Intel Xeon processors, which translates into a total of 512 CPU cores, in a 2-meter-tall cabinet that weighs 540 kilograms when fully loaded.
The new NEC server is also designed to achieve power savings by incorporating the latest software. The combined use of VMware's ESX 3.5 virtualization platform and NEC's proprietary integrated platform management software Sigma System Center enables applications to be most efficiently utilized depending on hardware loads.
The Eco Center is expected to support Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The shipment of Eco Center is slated to begin in September 2008.
