Google Sets up Regional Office in Singapore, Appoints New Head of Sales

Current Issue

It was an eventful day today for Google as it announced two breaking news back to back. First on the agenda- the opening of its regional office in Singapore which is set to serve the local market and Southeast Asia.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference earlier Google’s managing director of Southeast Asia Richard Kimber said that Singapore was chosen to be the heart of all Southeast Asia operations because it has one of the highest Internet penetration rates in the world with some 71 per cent of households having online access. The country’s central location and superior business and technology infrastructure also made it an ideal location for the Internet search colossus to set up shop.

“The online environment in Southeast Asia is seeing a rapid growth with dramatic adoption of the Internet especially in Singapore… We see it as being the first step to many as we advance in this region,” said Kimber.

The Mountain View, California based MNC is aiming to more effectively bring its leading advertising platform, services and search experience to users, advertisers and partners in the region with the new office which will house staff from the business development, marketing and sales divisions.

And to manage operations, Google subsequently announced that it has appointed Lori Sobel as head the sales for the Singapore office. Sobel, who has been with Google for four years was previously from Doublick- the Internet Advertising firm that Google acquired just months back.

"I look forward to helping organisations in Singapore and Southeast Asia understand and leverage the great returns that are available through Google's advertising platform with AdWords and AdSense," said Sobel.

"By working with Google, private and public sector organisations can achieve greater operational efficiency, better communications, and global distribution."

“We will continue to localise our products, we are committed to being here for the long haul, we will continue to work with advertisers and will innovate and bring the best solutions to the region.”

The Google Singapore office will focus primarily on serving both Google AdWords and Google AdSense to customers.

According to Kimber at the moment there are several dozen staff in the Singapore office and this number is set to rise in the coming months with Google actively tapping into the local talent pool.

Although Google's Southeast Asian advertisers currently represent a wide variety of organizations, ranging from SMEs and large enterprises to government agencies including Singtel (Singapore), Celcom (Malaysia) and ALS (Thailand), Sobel did admit that online advertising is still at a neophyte stage in Singapore but plans to change that by educating the public.

Google declined to quantify the amount it has invested in the new launch.
