Comcast Signs Definitive Deal to Acquire Plaxo

Current Issue

According to a post on Plaxo blog, Comcast, a provider of cable TV service and broadband access, has signed a definitive deal to acquire social networking service Plaxo.

Plaxo said social networking and other services would be added to its Comcast.net, Fancast.com and Fandango.com Web sites. Cable subscribers eventually will also be able to access the services through their set-top boxes and other devices.

Plaxo, founded in 2001, offers an online address book service that can automatically update contact information, and last August debuted a more traditional social networking service called Plaxo Pulse. According to Plaxo, until the deal is closed, the company will remain an independent operation, keeping on all 50 of its employees and working on growing its networked address book features, and Plaxo Pulse as well.

Terms of the deal were not yet disclosed, however, Comcast expects the acquisition of Plaxo to close in the next two months. The companies have already been working together in developing SmartZone, which is due to become available later this year.
