Mozilla Breathes Life Into Firefox 3.0 This Week
Starting this week, the
new version of the Firefox Web browser,
version 3.0, became available as a free download. Users can
download the latest version of the open-source browser, which includes an improved book marking system and drop-down search returns in the URL bar, among other features.
On the launch day, for more than two hours,
GetFirefox.com was flooded with users hopeful to download the latest version of Mozilla's open source browser. Unfortunately, the company wasn't prepared for the influx of potential downloaders looking for the application and the site crashed. A visit to the Mozilla website was surprisingly devoid of any mention of Firefox 3.0 with only an option to download the previous working edition of Firefox 2.0 available. Instant messages were traded and e-mails sent to discover what was going on at
Mozilla headquarters and to determine the situation being experienced by various enthusiasts worldwide who were hoping to download the Firefox 3.0 browser.
Firefox supporters organized launch parties around the world as they tried to set a world record for most software downloads in a 24-hour period.
Firefox 3.0 is a complete revamp of its predecessor. The new browser makes use of an implementation of Gecko 1.9, an updated layout engine. It is the first Firefox browser to pass the Acid2 test, a standards-compliance test for image rendering. It renders images faster than Firefox 2.0 and using less memory to do so.
