EMC Reveals Disk-based Backup Appliances Featuring Deduplication
EMC recently released a range of storage hardware and software, including the long-expected new disk-based backup appliances featuring de-duplication technology from Quantum. De-duplication technology detects repeated patterns in bytes or blocks of files and replaces them by pointers thus saving space and cutting the cost of storing backup and similar data on drive arrays.
The Disk Library 3D 1500 and 3000 products are de-duplicating disk-to-disk backup systems using software OEMed from Quantum. The new arrays are targeted at LAN-based backup, using NFS and CIFS protocols for file backup.
The EMC Disk Library 3D 1500 virtual tape libraries (VTL) is based on EMC's Clariion CX310 array, and provides up to 36 Tbytes of usable capacity, while the DL3D 3000 is based on the Clariion CX340 array for a usable capacity of up to 148 Tbytes. Both systems use new, larger-capacity 1TB Serial ATA disk drives with RAID 6 protection, and they offer optional Fibre Channel ports for SAN connectivity.
EMC also plans to start offering policy-based de-duplication on its DL 4000 enterprise-class VTL. The new SATA 1TB drives will also be available in the DL 3D 4000 VTL, which previously used 750GB drives.
EMC DL 3D 1500, DL 3D 3000 and DL 4000 will be generally available in the end of May from EMC and its authorized partners for a starting price of USD 150,000 and USD 215,000 and USD 200,000 respectively.
