Microsoft Takes the Beta Tag Off from Windows Live SkyDrive
Microsoft has launched the first nontest version of its Windows Live SkyDrive and also increased the storage space offered by SkyDrive from 1 GB to 5 Gb.
Microsoft says this service is beneficial for Indian users due to the increase in the number of people using the Internet, irrespective of their owning a computer. It allows users to upload 5 GB of data, with a 50 MB limit on each file.
Illustrating the 5GB data-holding capacity of SkyDrive, Microsoft cites that the service will enable users to store approximately 1,000 songs, over 30,000 Microsoft Office documents of average size, or 30,000 digital photos at a resolution of 1200 x 1200.
The online file storage service offers password protection and allows users to delegate different permission levels of access to personal, shared or public folders. The company did note that users must be signed into Microsoft's online network with their own Windows Live ID and password to view protected files hosted by SkyDrive. Data transfers are secured via Secure Sockets Layer technology, Microsoft said.
“This release also includes bug fixes and improvements to make the site even faster and more reliable” said the SkyDrive team on his blog.
To access the SkyDrive service, one needs a Windows Live ID. In order to share folders, people who need to access the files also need to have a Windows Live ID. SkyDrive is now accessible to the users in 38 countries, after it was previously available only to those living in US, UK and India.
