BSNL Eyes the Rural Market
The state-owned telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has unveiled a grand plan to expand in rural India, a big emerging market after the saturation in urban telecom market in the country.
The BSNL has proposed a new scheme in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh. Under this scheme a landline telephone will be available by paying installments of Rs 20 per month. This scheme is available only in rural parts of Uttar Pradesh. People can avail this facility either by paying Rs 200 at one go or by depositing Rs.20 per month. Under this scheme, the company offers 20 free calls per month to its subscribers.
BSNL, reportedly, is also planning to invest Rs. 500 crore in the next one year for its expansion initiatives in rural West Bengal (WB). The company aims to double its network infrastructure reach from the current 11600 cell sites to almost double.
“We are planning to roll out wimax technology at the block level in rural Bengal by 2009. This would mean broadband connection over a larger area on wireless. Wimax at the rural level is important as there are not enough landlines for wired broadband connections," a senior BSNL official said. BSNL also expects to rollout one lakh broadband connections in the state by the end of current financial year.
