Wireless enterprise networking with mobile softwar...

Mobile software applications: When designing mobile software applications, is it worthwhile to have continuous online connections? Take a look at standards and implementation options for creating a successful and effective corporate mobile application. Mobile software enables enterprise users to work more efficiently when they are away from their desks. But, when designing mobile software applications, developers need to consider whether it's worthwhile to have continuous online connections for users. With an offline application, mobile software stores data on the client device, a configuration that doesn't permit the movement of information between the client device and a server while the user is moving around a facility. A person making use of an asset management application, for example, scans item bar codes that the application software stores on the memory card within the user device. At some point, the user connects the mobile device to a PC and uploads the corresponding data to a server. Of course this process doesn't involve wireless connectivity, except for the possibility of using a short-range wireless Bluetooth or Infra-Red (IrDA) connection when synchronizing the data.

Goodness ! I cannot believe it has been over a week since last time I created a weblog post over here. Has it been that long? WOW! I guess that between work and a whole bunch of other things happening at the same time days have gone by without me noticing much about them. I suppose that time flies when you are having fun, eh? I have actually been following up on a number of different topics most of them related to Knowledge Management, Collaboration, Communities and Social Computing and they have kept me busy during all this time. The immediate consequence, of course, is the fact that I now have got a whole bunch of interesting stuff to share with you all, which I suppose would be a good thing as it would keep you busy reading for a while at the same time that it will give you a chance to chime in as well because some of those topics are actually quite engaging. But let’s just start with one step at a time.

Big Blue has announced that they are working on a new product called "Lotus Connections," which is targeted for a late 2007 release. From the IHT: "IBM is planning to introduce a set of social software tools Monday that will bring the kind of blogging, idea-sharing and war-story-swapping typically associated with sites like MySpace to the corporate world. And you thought social networking was all about, well, social networking — and mostly among bored teenagers. Called Lotus Connections, the new software, which should be available to companies this year, will let employees set up virtual worlds in which they can meet like-minded colleagues within the company and exchange ideas with them, all in the name of improving productivity.

IBM and social networking in the enterprise

IBM has just launched Lotus Connections, a suite of collaboration software, with functionality including staff profiles, communities, project spaces, social bookmarking, and blogging. This is a major release, but has long been on the cards. Back in November 2005 I discussed how Lotus executives were seeing the future in terms of social software. At the time blogs, photo sharing, social bookmarks and similar tools for consumers were rapidly emerging. These clearly had massive applicability to large corporations, where the tools and approaches of knowledge management had never fulfilled on their promise. Since then IBM has continued to roll out social software applications inside its own 300,000-strong organization and to select clients. There is no question that IBM sees social software as a key enabler of productivity in large organizations, and will continue to focus on development of the platforms.

Reasons why enterprise networking and security roles must stay ...

This sounds like a documentation or process failure to me and not one related to the sharing of the same chain of command. If the rule is required to fulfill a business requirement then it should be documented as such and made available in times of need (like for auditing purposes). Her final point suggests introducing an intermediary, in the form of a security engineer, to help open the communications channels between the two groups:
